Our Full Review

eClinicalWorks is one of the most widely deployed EMRs in the country, and its breadth is real: telehealth, population health analytics, patient engagement tools, and more modules than most practices will ever open. Pediatric practices can tap all of it. The catch, and it is a meaningful one, is that the pediatric experience is assembled through configuration rather than designed in, and extracting a smooth pediatric workflow from eCW takes patience and deliberate setup.

The place we felt this most was vaccine administration. The immunization module works, with registry connectivity and schedule management, but documenting a vaccine takes more clicks than it should. On a quiet afternoon that is an annoyance. On a Saturday flu clinic, when you are trying to vaccinate a full schedule of squirming children before naptime meltdowns begin, those extra clicks compound into real delay. Whoever designed that workflow was not picturing our October.

Growth charts render with a clinical plainness that gets the job done without any polish, and the well-child templates do not naturally walk a provider through the age-appropriate pieces of a preventive visit. You can build that guidance in, and practices do, but you are doing work the pediatric-native platforms have already done.

Credit where it is due: the integrated telehealth module is solid for follow-ups and parent consultations, and the population health tools are genuinely useful for tracking immunization rates and screening completion across a panel. The healow portal covers the basics of parent access, though configuring it properly for adolescent privacy and multi-guardian families took workarounds at the practice in our network that runs eCW, and that is not an area where workarounds inspire confidence.

If your organization already lives in the eCW ecosystem, pediatrics can be made to work adequately inside it. If you are choosing a platform specifically for a pediatric practice, there are more natural homes.
